The Rosetta Stone is an Ancient Egyptian artifact which provided the key to modem understanding of Egyptian hieroglyphs.
The stone is a Ptolemaic-era stele with an inscription recording a decree that was issued in 196 BCE by a congress of Egyptian priests in honour of 13 year –old King Ptolemy V. The decree appears in three versions: one in ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs, one in the Egyptian demotic script, and one in ancient Greek. Originally displayed in a temple and lost at an unknown date, the stele was rediscovered in 1799 at Rosetta in the Nile delta by a soldier of the French expedition to Egypt. The Egyptian scripts were at that time undeciphered.
