Abhiseka a sprinkling, anointment, empowerment, or initiation.
A ceremony in which a student is ritually entered into a mandala of a particular tantric deity by his vajra master.
He is thus empowered to practice. there are four principal abhisekas:
(1) vase abhiseka (kalasabhiseka), which includes the abhisekas of the five iluminated families: water(vajra), crown(ratna), vajra(padma), bell(karma), and name(illuminated);
(2) secret abhiseka(guhyabhiseka);
(3); prajnajnana-abhiseka and
(4) abhiseka(caturthabhiseka)
Four empowerments and according to the inner tantras, there are four levels or stages within any empowerment:
the vase empowerment Skt. kalasabhiseka
the secret empowerment Skt. guhyabhiseka
the knowledge-wisdom empowerment; Skt. prajnajnana-abhiseka an

The Function of the Four Empowerments
The Vase Empowerment
purifies all the negative karma accumulated through negative actions of the body
grants the blessings of the vajra body, undestructible.
unknots and heals the etheric channels, nadis
empowers the student as a receptive vessel for the generation stage of visualization
The Secret Empowerment
purifies all the negative karma accumulated through negative actions of the speech
grants the blessings of vajra speech
unblocks and re-balances the pranas
empowers the student as a receptive vessel for mantra recitation
Sows the seed for the attainment of the state of a ‘vidyadhara with power over life’.
The Transcendent Knowledge-Wisdom Empowerment
purifies all the negative karma accumulated through negative actions of the mind
grants the blessings of the vajra mind
purifies and enhances bindu-mind
empowers the student as a receptive vessel for the tummo chandali practices of bliss and emptiness
sows the seed for the attainment of the state of a ‘mahamudra vidyadhara’
The Precious Word Empowerment
purifies all defilements of body, speech and mind, and all karmic and cognitive obscurations
grants the blessings of vajra wisdom
empowers the student as a receptive vessel for the practice of the state of a ‘spontaneously accomplished vidyadhara’
Vidyadhara with power over life
One gains the power to purify the ordinary body and transform it into a subtle body, which is immortal.
